On April 3, 2024, a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Hualien, causing significant damage to Taroko National Park. The earthquake triggered numerous landslides and rockfalls, leading to widespread destruction of roads, trails, and facilities within the park.

As a result, the park was closed to the public for a period of time. Restoration efforts are underway, but the process is expected to be lengthy. Some of the most heavily impacted areas could take years to repair.

However, there is a phased reopening plan in progress. Some less-damaged areas of the park have already reopened to the public. The government aims to repair and reopen the section from the Taroko Arch Gate to the Changchun Shrine (Eternal Spring Shrine) by the end of 2024. It is essential to check the official Taroko National Park website for the latest information on trail closures and road conditions before your visit.
